How to start your own rum brand
You do not need to own a distillery to have a rum brand. Here is the path from idea to your own bottle on the shelf.

Surprisingly few rum brands own a distillery. Most start as a blending house or bottler: you buy bulk rum from producers, blend and refine it, and release it under your own name. Here is roughly what the journey looks like.
1. Flavour first, business later
Start by tasting and blending. What makes your rum different? An origin, a spice profile, a story? Without a clear flavour idea, it stays a pretty label.
2. Regulation
Producing or bottling alcohol for sale requires licences (excise, food safety, labelling). Budget months for this, or work with a licensed co-packer.
3. Sourcing
Bulk rum is bought from producers in the Caribbean, South America and beyond. Flavours differ enormously by origin — ordering sample sets is not a luxury but a necessity.
4. Blend & bottle
This is where the magic happens: combining components into a consistent flavour, batch after batch. Consistency is what separates a brand from an experiment.
5. Label & story
Your label is your shop window. Design it as if someone sees your bottle for the first time in a crowded shelf — because that is exactly what happens.
Start small
Many brands begin with a microbatch for friends, events or one local shop. Starting small teaches you everything at low risk.
