Rum is made from sugarcane — molasses or fresh cane juice that is fermented, distilled, and often aged in oak casks. Leave that part to the distillery. Your part starts at the bottle. Here is how to make your own rum at home, step by step.

Step 1 — Choose your base

Pick a neutral, affordable white or gold rum. 37.5–40% ABV is plenty. Expensive aged rum is wasted on infusions.

Step 2 — Pick a direction

  • Spiced → cinnamon, clove, star anise, pepper
  • Fruity → dried orange, pineapple, raisins
  • Sweet & warm → vanilla, tonka bean, coffee, cacao

Step 3 — Infuse

Add your botanicals to the rum in a sealable jar. Start small: botanicals are powerful. Steep for 2 to 7 days, shake daily, taste every day.

Step 4 — Filter and finish

Strain through a coffee filter. Too strong? Blend with a neutral rum. Too sharp? A touch of sugar syrup or honey works wonders.

Step 5 — Give it a name

A custom label completes it — and makes a great gift.

Prefer professional guidance? In Build Your Rum you do this with dozens of components and a blender at your side — and your bottle with its own label goes home with you.
